Surveyors may deal with trees in many contexts. In addition to their relevance as property corners or as line markers, they may provide evidence of possession contrary to record boundaries. Tree branches and roots are also common sources of dispute when they are near or on a property boundary. Additional problems arise when 'private vs. public rights' are involved, or trees present an apparent threat to adjoining landowners or to the traveling public. Frequent disputes arise between landowners and utility companies over the removal of trees from easement corridors.

Preparing for the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam? Vincent Logan, PLS, CFedS, presents a condensed version of his exam preparation course offered through Clark College. This session will review key concepts and topics covered on the FS exam, including the Public Land Survey System, boundary principles, surveying mathematics, field measurements, geodesy, and coordinate systems. Participants will gain insight into the exam's subject areas and resources to help guide their preparation.

This session explores the historical development of horizontal and vertical geodetic datums in the United States, including reference ellipsoids, geoid models, and coordinate systems. Participants will gain a better understanding of the foundations of geodesy, how these reference systems have evolved, and the role of advancing technology in shaping modern surveying practices.

Building on Part 1, this session examines contemporary geodetic reference systems and their practical applications in land surveying. Topics include modern coordinate systems, the relationship between horizontal and vertical datums, and the technological advancements driving the National Geodetic Survey's (NGS) efforts to modernize the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS). Participants will gain a clearer understanding of how these changes relate to surveying practices and the transition to new reference systems.

Completion surveys were conducted to extend the original public land surveys into lands deemed either unsurveyable or not worth the expense. When encountering them in modern times, they can create unique challenges when subdividing sections today. This presentation provides an overview of completion surveys and fractional sections under the 2009 Manual of Surveying Instructions, followed by a series of real-world examples ranging from straightforward to complex. Attendees will explore how completion surveys affect section subdivision, methods for evaluating subdivisional approaches, and the importance of protecting bona fide rights while preserving the integrity of the original plats.
